Trauma Informed Approaches to Primary Care
Calling all primary care providers (family physicians, nurse practitioners, interdisciplinary team members and medical staff)! Come join this focused discussion with fellow primary care providers where we will offer insights on trauma informed care, managing boundaries and compassionate disinterest. How do providers offer a safe respectful space for our patients while maintaining boundaries and limits? Common coping mechanisms are rescuing the patient (working harder than they are) or avoidance/minimizing their issues. Both of these techniques will overwhelm the provider in the long term.
This course is a full day CPD event looking at trauma informed care in more detail. We feel that trauma informed care is as transformative for the care of difficult patients as hand washing was for infectious disease. Trauma informed care is a core skill or threshold concept- a key competency that is foundational for rewarding patient interactions. This full day event about trauma informed care offers skills for managing difficult therapeutic relationships that will be used over the course of one’s career.
Come connect with colleagues and community partners while learning about trauma-informed care, its importance in our health-care system and how this aligns with the FLA OHT Health Homes vision that we are building together. The day's events are sponsored by FLA OHT, in partnership with Kingston Community Health Centres' (KCHC) Teach Resilience, a social enterprise of Pathways to Education. $25 registration fee. Please note all proceeds of this training will be reinvested into KCHC Pathways to Education - a vital resource for youth in our community.
